The quest titled The Mind of Madness in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim offers one of the most surreal experiences in the entire game. Players find themselves trapped inside the fractured mind of Pelagius the Mad, tasked with curing his ancient psychological torments. To escape this bizarre realm and claim the legendary Wabbajack staff, you must successfully navigate three distinct trial encounters, including waking up Pelagius from his deep nightmare.

Starting The Mind of Madness Quest

To begin this quest, speak with a wanderer named Dervenin roaming the streets of Solitude near the Blue Palace. Dervenin asks for help locating his master, leading you to obtain a key to the abandoned Pelagius Wing. Once inside, walking down the dusty corridor instantly teleports your character into the mind of the deceased emperor.

Upon arrival, you meet Sheogorath, the Daedric Prince of Madness, sitting at a banquet table in a clearing surrounded by mist. Sheogorath agrees to leave Pelagius' mind on the condition that you fix the emperor's mental state using a special quest artifact. He equips you with the Wabbajack, which is the only weapon permitted within this realm.

How to Wake Up Pelagius

To wake Pelagius, head down the path toward the area featuring a sleeping Pelagius lying on a bed in the open field. Every time he experiences a nightmare, an enemy creature will materialize right beside him. Using physical weapons will not work here, so you must rely entirely on the staff provided by the Daedric Prince.

Aim the Wabbajack directly at the sleeping Pelagius rather than the monsters that spawn around him. Firing at Pelagius transforms his nightmare entities into peaceful or friendly creatures, such as turning a terrifying wolf into a harmless goat. Repeat this targeting process through several nightmare cycles until Pelagius finally rests peacefully, successfully waking him from the torment.

Solving the Remaining Mental Trials

Beyond the nightmare sequence, you must also conquer two other paths representing Pelagius' inner struggles: his paranoia and his confidence. In the trial of confidence, hit the tiny representation of Pelagius' Confidence with the Wabbajack to make it grow while shrinking his spectral Angers. In the trial of paranoia, transform the arena guards into harmless creatures using the staff to resolve his deep-seated fear of betrayal.

Completing all three pathways frees the emperor from his centuries-long madness and pleases the Daedric Prince. Once you finish all tasks, speak to Sheogorath to complete the quest and return safely to Solitude, keeping the iconic Wabbajack as your permanent reward.
